Canada and other Group of Seven advanced democracies are expected to hold a meeting Sunday to discuss options for a potential response to Iran’s attack on Israel on Saturday.
U.S. President Joe Biden said he would convene the meeting of the G7 Sunday to coordinate a united diplomatic response to an attack that he described as brazen.
Iran launched about 300 missiles and drones at targets inside Israel on Saturday, but according to Israeli officials the country and its allies were able to intercept about 99% of the weapons and sustained only minor damage to a military facility.
Iran has since declared the operation over.
Amid this, Canada’s political parties have become united in condemning Iran following Saturday’s attack.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada “unequivocally condemns” the offensive that further destabilizes a region that’s already mired in a six-month-long war between Israel and Hamas terrorists.
Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre said Canada must stand with Israel and work with allies to hold Iran to account, while NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson called the attack “yet another terrifying and reckless escalation in the Middle East.”
