Japan’s royal family has made an Instagram debut with a flurry of posts, looking to shed their reclusive image and engage younger people on social media.
Around 60 photos and five videos showing Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako’s public appearances over the past three months were posted by the Imperial Household Agency, the government agency in charge of the family’s affairs.
The Japanese imperial family’s first foray into social media comes 15 years after the United Kingdom’s royal family joined X, formerly Twitter, back in 2009.
Thus far, the images are limited to the family’s official duties and don’t include any private or candid moments, however the agency said it was considering adding the activities of other royal members.
