Joe Flaherty, who was born in Pittsburgh, served with the U.S. Air Force for four-years before joining Chicago improv group The Second City.

He moved to Canada to help set up Second City’s Toronto troupe and was one of the founding members of the offshoot ”SCTV” sketch comedy show that ran from 1976 to 1984.

Flaherty’s costars included John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, Catherine O’Hara and Andrea Martin.

Other TV roles followed as well as small, memorable ones in movies like ”Happy Gilmore,” ”Back to the Future Part II,” and ”Anchorman.”

”I take solace in the memories we shared and the incredible impact he had on those around him,” said daughter Gudrun Flaherty in a statement.

Joe Flaherty later became an artist-in-residence at Humber College.
