Allowing people to drink alcohol in 27 Toronto parks could soon become permanent.
City staff have made the recommendation to allow consumption of alcohol in at least one park in each city ward.
City Councillor Paula Fletcher, who is also a regular panelist on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, says members of the city’s economic and community development committee will consider the recommendations Thursday.
“Once the city sends that to city council in April, then that will happen, alcohol will be permanent in 27 parks,” Fletcher explained, “Of course, if there’s a problem, it could be taken out of a park.”
A pilot program allowing alcohol in some parks took place from August 2nd to October 9th.
City staff has also recommended that parks involved in the program going forward should be at least 1.5 hectares in size, have a washroom, seasonal drinking water and not be on the waterfront.
