In a rare public appearance, Canadian music legend Anne Murray gave out the award for group of the year at Sunday night’s Juno awards in Halifax.

The 78-year-old music icon and native Nova Scotian, told the audience how she attended the very first Juno Awards in 1970, known back then as the Gold Leaf Awards.

“And it was basically, just a great big party at a small hall in Toronto, with about 250 people, no TV coverage, where lots of people got hammered, but not me of course,” Murray joked.

Murray also referenced her age when she spoke to the audience. “Some of you may be too young to know very much about me, or maybe not,” said Murray after the crowd erupted in applause.

Murray went on to present Toronto band The Beaches the trophy for group of the year.
