B’Nai Brith Canada says it’s outraged by a motion that passed last night in the House of Commons calling it irresponsible and an appalling disregard for Israel’s right to defend itself.

“B’nai Brith unequivocally condemns the NDP motion to be heard in the House of Commons on March 18th. The motion provides unrealistic recommendations to the Government of Canada on how to respond to the Israel-Hamas war.B’nai Brith has sent a letter to all sitting MPs and has also coordinated a joint statement endorsed by a broad range of stakeholders from across the country condemning the motion.” Click here for full statement.

The NDP motion passed after hours-long debate but was amended from the original wording that called for the government to officially recogznie the state of Palestine.

It was supported by all New Democrats and all but three Liberals including Anthony Housefather who says the motion sends the wrong signal.

“Hamas launched the deadliest attack on Isreal since the Holocaust and we’re changing our foreign policy to reward Hamas and say good for you terrorists,” said Housefather.

The softened version of the non-binding motion read that Canada should “actively pursue” the establishment of a Palestinian state as part of a negotiated two-state solution, which aligns with Ottawa’s existing policy.

Conservatives Michelle Rempel Garner calls the vote an embarrassment. “The Liberals came in with a substantive amendment that changed seven out of nine components of the original motion.”
