In an effort to bolster security, there’s been a call to make the RCMP the police force on Parliament Hill.
National Police Federation president Brian Sauve says the so-called “trucker protests” in 2022 marked a profound failure to maintain public order in the capital.
The Parliamentary Police Service was created in 2014 to provide security on Parliament Hill, both in the buildings and on the grounds. But officers have extremely limited authority or capacity to address unlawful activity,
The Police Federation says reinstating the RCMP on Parliament Hill would ensure the swift and efficient deployment of officers. Such a detachment may include up to 300 officers to assist with future protest scenarios.
