He is the latest in a new cohort of millennial politicians joining Pierre Poilieve’s team in the House of Commons.

Conservative candidate Jamil Jivani easily won Monday’s federal byelection in the riding of Durham.

He took more than 55-percent of the vote to the Liberal candidate’s 22-percent.

Jivani told his victory party the prime minister thinks people like him, the 36 year old son of an African immigrant, should automatically be part of the Liberal party.

“Justin Trudeau doesn’t really know what to do with people like me,” Jivani explained, “He doesn’t know what to do with a lot of people in this room. He looks at us and he thinks his party owns us and owns our communities.”

While Durham is a Conservative stronghold, it’s one of the largest margins of victory the Conservatives have had in the riding in the past twenty years.

Voter turnout in byelections is generally lower than in national campaigns. In the Durham byelection Monday, just under 22 percent of registered voters cast ballots.

In the 2021 general election, turnout in Durham was about 61 percent.
