Toronto Police investigators are reviewing whether there was illegal activity at Saturday’s protest outside the Art Gallery of Ontario which led to the cancellation of an event hosted by Justin Trudeau for the Italian prime minister.
The reception at the AGO was organized to cap off a day of meetings between Canada’s prime minister and Giorgia Meloni.
It was suddenly cancelled after some 400 anti-Israeli protesters blocked entrances to the building and prevented many attendees from getting in.
Toronto Police tell Zoomer Radio News police were in contact with Trudeau’s security team who were told TPS was prepared to provide secure access for the prime minister into the venue.
Police say ultimately it was the PM’s team that decided not to proceed.
A statement from Trudeau’s office says neither he nor Meloni were able to enter the venue which briefly went into lockdown.
Meantime, a 27 year old man has been arrested and charged after bringing what appeared to be a nail gun to a demonstration attended by both pro and anti Israeli demonstrators outside a Thornhill synagogue.
In a video widely shared on social media, a man is seen acting aggressively towards pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
Ilan-Reuben Abramov of Vaughan has been charged in the alleged attack.
