Former U.S. President Donald Trump trounced Nikki Haley in the South Carolina primary yesterday, and is now all but assured of winning the Republican nomination.
At this point, it would seem the only thing that could derail Trump would be if one of his many legal problems resulted in him being ineligible to be on November’s presidential ballot.
It’s a victory that emphatically punctuated the depth and breadth of his support among Republican primary voters as he vanquished his lone remaining major opponent Saturday in her home state.
Trump did not even have to mount a vigorous campaign, making few appearances and spending relatively little money.
Haley has vowed to stay in the race and planned to visit Michigan, the site of the next primary. But the loss further eroded the rationale for her candidacy, barring something unforeseen that would derail the former president.
Both the Trump and Biden campaigns are now clearly focusing their attention on the presidential race.
