Problem? What problem?
Saying he’s ”100%” okay two former senior staff members are now part of the judicial selection process, Doug Ford adds his Conservatives were elected to get like-minded people in appointments.
”I’m appointing like-minded people that believe in what we believe in — keeping the bad guys in jail,” says Ford.
The selection committee goes over applications and conducts interviews for prospective provincial court judges, then sends a ranked list of recommendations to the attorney-general, who also appointed Ford’s former staffers to that committee.
Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie urges Ford to reverse the appointments of the former staffers, saying ”We do not want U.S.-style politicization.”
Frank Addario, a former president of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association and one-time vice-president of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association agrees.
”It will be tainted by the perception that it’s (the committee) controlled by the premier’s office and the attorney-general’s office for political ends.”
