MPPs RETURN TO LEGISLATURE AS STILES AND CROMBIE TRY TO DIFFERENTIATE THEIR OPPOSITION TO THE FORD PCs

Ontario members of provincial parliament head back to the legislature Tuesday after a 10-week break.

There will be a flurry of activity from repealing an unconstitutional wage restraint law known as Bill 124 to enacting a reversal of a decision to dissolve Peel Region, and introducing politically charged omnibus legislation which could allow for the building of the controversial Highway 413.

“The billions of dollars they spend on that (Highway 413) would be better spent on a healthcare system and building affordable housing,” cautioned Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner.

But a major lingering question is what the province will do about the post-secondary sector.

Administrators at Colleges and universities have already been challenged with frozen tuition-fee revenues and low and stagnant levels of operating funding from the government, but they are also now facing a loss of revenue from international students with recent news of a federal cap on visas.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles says her party’s priorities for the coming session include addressing staff shortages in hospitals and expediting housing.

“People are waiting for hours for basic healthcare, they are stuck with sky-rocketing costs of housing, and their bills are not getting any lower,” Stiles says in a statement.

Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, who does not have a seat in the legislature, is laying out similar priorities.

“While Desperate Doug spends all of his time distracting Ontario citizens from his failures, flip flops, scandals and insider deals, Ontario Liberals will remain squarely focused on fighting for better healthcare and education, more housing, and a growing economy that lifts up every family in Ontario,” Crombie says in a statement.
