As the province celebrates Black History Month, the Ford government plans to introduce mandatory learning in Grades 7, 8 and 10 history on the contributions and history of Black Canadians who helped build this country.
Starting in September 2025, history classes in those grades will include mandatory learning with the emphasis on elevating Black history as Canadian history, highlighting the various Black communities that emerged, developed and contributed to Canada’s growth; including pre- and post-Confederation.
By making it mandatory, Education Minister Stephen Lecce says ”the next generation of Canadians will better appreciate the sacrifice, patriotic commitment and long-lasting contributions Black Canadians have made to Canada.”
Over the next year, the ministry will consult with historians, educators and the Black community, that will inform this new learning.
”As the granddaughter of the Honourable Lincoln Alexander, I am thrilled,” said Erika Alexander.
”It is vital that students learn about the contributions and struggles of Black Canadians as they are a fundamental part of Canadian history, and I hope this leas to a more inclusive and inspiring education system for all.”
