Several hours after the case of five members of Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team had its first hearing in London, Ontario court, the police provided an update.

Chief Thai Truong extended his sincerest apology to the alleged victim, for the amount of time it’s taken to reach this point.

The investigation into the alleged incident in 2018 initially closed the following year with no charges laid.

It was reopened in 2022 when London police found new evidence.

The investigator in charge of the case says a review committee has not looked into why it was dropped five years ago.

Det. Sgt. Katherine Dann also says concurrent investigations ”did add complexity” to her probe but did not go into detail as to why the NHL and Hockey Canada investigations made the one by police harder.

Meanwhile, Hockey Canada says all members of that 2018 team will remain suspended until its investigation is complete.

The case against the five has been put over until the end of April.
