An international travel company is warning Canadians not to be duped by online travel scammers after one of its customers paid over $2,000 to an imposter website.

Ihsan Abdul Salam is a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia.

He says he Googled Flight Centre to book tickets to Sao Paulo, Brazil for a trip to visit his girlfriend.

But Abdul Salam says the tickets never arrived, and when he went to a Flight Centre branch in Vancouver to resolve the issue, he was told the website he used was an imposter.

Flight Centre says it has been dealing a slew of fake websites since the summer, and has had over 200 fraudulent sites taken down so far.

The travel agency says the sites have appeared in Google search results across Canada.

According to Flight Centre Canada’s executive vice-president Chadd Andre,  it is not clear where the fake sites are based, noting that it’s hard to completely eradicate them.

Andre advises that customers should go directly to Flight Centre’s official website or visit one of their brick-and-mortar locations in person to book travel tickets.
