A transport truck filled with liquid petroleum gas cylinders exploded in a depot, setting off a late-night inferno that torched homes and warehouses in Kenya’s capital.

Officials say at least three people are dead and 280 people were injured, at least two dozen of which were in critical condition.

On Friday, a government spokesman for the African nation reported that many people were home when the fire reached their houses in a Nairobi neighborhood late Thursday, noting that the injured were rushed to several hospitals to be treated.

A regulatory body has claimed that the gas depot did not have permits to operate in the area.
