Multi-award-winning musician Branford Marsalis is embarking on a new job in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Marsalis is slated to be named Tuesday as the new artistic director for the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, which was named for his late father.
Ellis Marsalis, who died in 2020 at age 85, was the patriarch of a powerhouse family of accomplished New Orleans musicians that also includes trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.
Located just minutes from the Mississippi River, the Ellis Marsalis Center offers music and cultural education programs for youths and adults.
The Center is part of the Musicians’ Village, a housing development built in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity.
Branford Marsalis and fellow New Orleans musician Harry Connick Jr. championed its development following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
