LEGENDARY DIRECTOR MARTIN SCORSESE NOMINATED FOR ACADEMY AWARD WHILE MANY CANADIANS ALSO RECOGNIZED

The 2024 Oscar nominations have been announced.

The nominees for best picture are: American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

Lily Gladstone, star of Killers of the Flower Moon, has become the first Native American nominated for best actress.

For the 10th time, Martin Scorsese was nominated for best director for Killers of the Flower Moon. But star Leonardo DiCaprio was left out of best actor.

Among the nominated films is the Ukraine war documentary 20 Days in Mariupol which is a joint production between The Associated Press and PBS’ Frontline and will compete in the best documentary category.

Canadians figure prominently in the 2024 Academy Award nominations.

Ryan Gosling is up for best supporting actor for his role as Ken in Barbie.

Writer-director Celine Song’s film Past Lives is nominated for best picture and best original screenplay for her romantic drama.

The late Canadian musician Robbie Robertson is nominated for his work on the score for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

Quebec filmmaker Vincent Rene-Lortie received a nod in the live action short category for his film, Invincible.

The National Film Board of Canada film To Kill a Tiger, by Toronto-based director Nisha Pahuja, has been nominated in the best documentary feature category.

Also nominated is Nova Scotia filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, who received a best short documentary nod for co-directing The Last Repair Shop.
