Denmark’s Prime Minister proclaimed Frederik X as king, after his mother Queen Margrethe formally signed her abdication.

The 83-year old Margrethe is the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years.

Her son, 55-year old Frederik, was proclaimed king on the balcony of the palace in Copenhagen before thousands of onlookers.

Frederik’s 18-year old son Christian, is now Denmark’s crown prince and heir to the throne.
