Two people are dead after a fire at a home in Thornhill last night.

Firefighters were called to a home on Conley Street, just north of Steeles Avenue and east of Dufferin Street just after 7:30 pm.

Two people pulled out from a basement apartment – a man and a woman – were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other people from the upper level of the house managed to escape without injury.

Vaughan Fire Chief Andrew Zvanitajs says two other people, living on the upper level, were able to escape after hearing the smoke detector go off.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is investigating.
