South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been released from prison on parole after serving about two-thirds of his original sentence for killing his girlfriend.
The announcement from the Department of Corrections gives no further details on Friday’s release of the world famous double amputee Olympic runner.
Pistorius has served nearly nine years of his almost 13-and-a-half-year murder sentence for killing model and law graduate, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day 2013.
He was approved for parole in November.
Reeva Steenkamp’s mother said she accepted the decision to release the former athlete, but added her family was the one “serving a life sentence.”
