The iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris closed to the public today due to a strike by staff.
Employees are protesting about the way the Tower is being managed.
The date of the strike was certainly not picked at random: December 27th marks the centenary of the death of the tower’s creator, Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel, a very successful structural engineer, died on this day in 1923, at the age of 91.
Completed in 1889, the 330-metre (1,082-ft) Eiffel Tower remains one of the world’s prime tourist attractions, with nearly 6 million visitors last year.
It’s unclear whether staff plan to extend the strike beyond today or if it was a one-day walkout.
