There is a new city councillor at Toronto City Hall.

“I’m looking forward to working with the mayor, Mayor Olivia Chow,” Parthi Kandavel told supporters after his byelection win in Toronto’s Ward 20, Scarborough Southwest, “The people of Scarborough Southwest, at a very unique time, have given and have called for a practical progressive option, that looks at the challenges, makes sensible smart solutions that work with the contours of a unique ward that in a way, is a microcosm of the city.”

Parthi Kandavel is a teacher and former Toronto District School Board Trustee.

He fills the seat left vacant by Gary Crawford who resigned to run unsuccessfully for the PCs in a provincial byelection this past summer.

His victory in Scarborough Southwest is expected to be confirmed by the city clerk next week.

Meantime, Mike Schreiner has company at Queen’s Park.

Ontario’s Green Party leader posted on X last night, “Say hello to the new MPP for Kitchener Centre, Aislinn Clancy.”

A social worker and Kitchener city councillor, Clancy easily won yesterday’s provincial byelection over the New Democratic Party candidate in what had been an NDP riding since 2018.

She is now just the second Green member of provincial parliament after Schreiner, who represents the nearby riding of Guelph.

Mike Morrice holds Kitchener Centre federally for the Greens, and ahead of the vote Clancy said that was an advantage for her.
