The Martin D-28; the choice of acoustic guitar players both professional and amateur all over the world.

The six string that Gordon Lightfoot played for much of his career was a D-28.  It was also the guitar of choice for Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.

Now comes word that 1963 Martin D-28, the first guitar bought by Graham Nash as a 21-year-old who had just started his band The Hollies in England, is going to auction.

Nash kept the guitar for a decade before gifting it to 27-year old Judy Sill, the opening act of Crosby Stills Nash and Young’s first tour in 1972.

Sill’s family held on to the guitar after her death in 1979.

The storied instrument is going on the block next month at Heritage Auctions Vintage Guitars and Musical Instruments sale and is expected to go for big bucks.

The auction is set for December 8th.
