Brampton’s Mayor says the death of an asylum seeker who was camped outside a former shelter needs to be a wakeup call for other levels of government.

“In Peel Region, it is beyond comprehension that we’ve allowed this to happen,” Brown told reporters.

Mayor Patrick Brown says his heart broke when he learned the news of Tuesday’s death and that since July, the situation has reached a crisis.

He says there are 1,200 claimants being sheltered in Peel..making up 68 percent of the total system when typically that number is 5 percent. Brown says support from the provincial and federal government isn’t coming fast enough.

Community builder and activist Gwyn Chapman is calling for immediate action. “I am urging everyone with a heart to come together, to continue to build this country.”

Peel Regional Police say a man in his 40’s was found outside the former site of a shelter that had relocated to a new address last year.
