Communities gathered across Canada Saturday to recognize the third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The federal holiday commemorates the shameful legacy of Canada’s residential school system and its harms to Indigenous Peoples.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the day should be about listening to survivors.

In the nation’s capital, residential school survivors and Indigenous leaders are set to attend a commemorative event on Parliament Hill.

Expected to attend in Ottawa is Governor General Mary Simon, who says the day is one for reflection but also for action.

Events are also taking place across the country, including powwows in Victoria, Winnipeg and Toronto.

The City of Toronto is inviting people to Nathan Phillips Square for the two-day Indigenous Legacy Gathering which started Friday.

The event, put on by the Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, showcases and celebrates the diversity of Indigenous Peoples’ cultures, traditions and languages through workshops, presentations, stories, dance, and more.
