The Tax Man has shown the door to 120 workers.
Canada Revenue Agency says the decision follows an internal review into employees who inappropriately claimed the Canada Emergency Response Benefit or CERB during the pandemic.
It was worth $2,000-monthly to Canadians whose jobs were lost or downgraded because of public-health restrictions.
Claims for CERB were found to be legit in 30 cases, such as for those who had temporary or student contracts.
CRA is not saying how many cases have been referred to police, but one former employee was charged with fraud for allegedly collecting nearly $20,000 CERB and the Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit.
The tax agency emphasizes that the ”actions of some in now way undermine the honesty and integrity of the more than 60,00 CRA employees.”
An internal agency audit of over $5-billion in CERB and other emergency payments to Canadians during COVID, found about 65% went to ineligible recipients who must return the money.
The Auditor-General said last December that billions in ineligible COVID benefit payments are at risk of going uncollected because Ottawa is doing a poor job of identifying individuals and businesses that should pay the funds.
