A raging, massive wildfire that swept through a small town on the Hawaiian island of Maui this week has killed at least 93 people, and the death toll is expected to rise. It’s estimated more than 1,000 people are still unaccounted for.
The Maui wildfire is already the deadliest of the past century in the United States.
The inferno that swept through the historic town of Lahaina on Maui’s west coast. The state’s governor, Josh Green, grimly predicted more bodies will be found.
Federal emergency workers and cadaver dogs picked through the aftermath of the blaze, marking the ruins of homes with a bright orange X for an initial search and HR when they found human remains.
At least 2,200 buildings were damaged or destroyed in West Maui, of which 86% were residential.
Initial damage estimates have been pegged at nearly $6 billion dollars.
