The final work by Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt has become the most valuable work of art ever sold at auction in Europe.
“Lady with a Fan” has gone to a collector from Hong Kong for more than $108 million in an auction that lasted just ten minutes.
It was estimated to go for around $86 million
The portrait of the unnamed woman was still on an easel in Klimt’s studio when the painter died in 1918.
It’s described as a masterpiece by an artist at the height of his powers with strong Asian influences. It’s viewed as part of the “Japonisme” trend, which refers to the influence of Japanese art and design among Western European artists.
“Lady with a Fan” is also among the very few portraits by Klimt who was considered in his artistic prime when he died at age 55.
