Cursive writing is making a comeback.

After becoming optional in 2006 in Ontario elementary schools, its set to return in the fall as mandatory part of the curriculum starting in grade 3.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce says it’s part of a host of changes in the new language curriculum.

“If we want to boost reading instruction we have to embrace those time tested strategies that have worked for generations with a return to phonics and cursive writing.”

Lecce says research shows that cursive writing is a critical life skill in helping young people to express themselves and to think more critically.
