According to Statistics Canada, between 2021 and 2022, the amount of fresh fruit available on store shelves decreased by more than 5% across the country.
Statistics Canada says that continued supply chain challenges, manpower shortages, and price increases have resulted in an almost 6% decrease in the availability of fresh vegetables, with the exception of potatoes.
Despite record production in some Canadian food industry sectors in 2022, manufacturers exported more food worldwide than the previous year.
The amount of milk available to Canadians has also fallen by roughly 4%, but the availability of red meat and poultry has increased.
