Part of Tina Turner’s legacy is rooted in her empowerment of women.

Renowned Toronto Musicologist Eric Alper told The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane, Tina’s autobiography I, Tina was groundbreaking in that she told the world about the abuse she suffered in her marriage to Ike Turner.

“I think that changed the world, I really do,” Alper explained, “I think it allowed women to talk about their experiences in a very public manner and I think whether she realized it or not, she became this feminist icon to standing up for herself and just trying to do the best of what she could do.”

The Broadway musical based on Tina’s life is coming to Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre next year.

Tina Turner died this week after a long illness at the age of 83.
