The National Weather Service says Typhoon Mawar slammed into Guam as a forceful Category 4 storm.
It is thrashing the U.S. Pacific territory with strong winds, heavy rains and a dangerous storm surge saturating low-lying areas as residents hunker down in homes and shelters.
According to the National Weather Service the typhoon passed over the northern tip of Guam on Wednesday evening.
Earlier, the weather service warned of a “triple threat” of torrential rains, winds, and life-threatening storm surge.
Officials and residents were bracing for “considerable damage” including non-reinforced concrete walls being knocked down, fuel storage tanks rupturing and overturned cars.
