One of the world’s largest automakers has stopped construction on an E-V battery plant in Windsor, saying the federal government has not delivered on what was promised.
Premier Doug Ford says the government needs to support Stellantis in the same way it did with Volkswagen for a recent deal to build a battery plant, which included subsidies of up to $13-billion dollars.
Stellantis, which makes Chrysler, Ram and Fiat cars among others… and South Korean battery-maker L-G Energy Solution… announced the $5-billion-dollar plant last year and said it was expected to create 2,500 jobs.
Premier Ford says he’s concerned and that the federal government needs to support Stellantis in the same way it did Volkswagen.
All levels of government were to provide financial support in the pending deal, but Stellantis now says the federal government “has not delivered on what was agreed to.”
The federal government says negotiations are ongoing.
Canada’s deal with Volkswagen includes subsidies worth up to $13 billion plus a $700 million dollar grant.
