Over the course of their more than 200-year history, the Sisters of Charity of New York have nursed Civil War casualties, participated in civil rights and anti-war marches, cared for orphans, and educated countless children.

However, the Catholic nuns recently announced that their ageing order will no longer accept new members in the United States and will instead follow the ”path of completion.”

The nuns say the decision to set the stage for their congregation’s demise was not an easy one.

Its population has fallen from more than 1,300 in the 1960’s to just 154 presently.

In the United States, no new sisters have joined in over 20 years.
