The Ontario Medical Association is marking “Doctor’s Day” with a warning.

President Dr. Rose Zacharias says there are enormous pressures on the healthcare system, leading to physician burnout.

“We know that the number one reason why doctors are dealing with burnout, some causing early retirement, is all the other expectations that land on a doctor’s lap beyond the clinical care that they do,” said Dr. Zacharias. “There’s an incredible documentation burden and electronic medical records are incredibly cumbersome for some to work with.”

Physicians launched a new social media campaign to address issues over the shortage of doctors, burnout and the need for integrated health centres. The May 1st celebration dates back to 2011 when the province chose the date to honour the birthdate of Canada’s first female physician Dr. Emily Stowe.

More than one million people in Ontario do not have a family doctor.

This is also National First Responders Day.

Since 2013, every May 1st is a day to recognize the contributions of paramedics, firefighters, police officers and the military.
