Over the course of a more than 50-year career, designer Karl Lagerfeld has said a lot of provocative things.
However, Lagerfeld’s work, not his words, are the main focus of the new spring fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, launching during Monday’s extravagant Met Gala.
The gallery walls are constructed to represent the intrinsic duality, or contradiction, of Lagerfeld’s persona and design aesthetic, a series of curves and straight lines.
The exhibition, which was conceptualized by curator Andrew Bolton, is expansive in scale but exquisitely detailed, showcasing not only amazing clothing but also unusual items like a recreation of Lagerfeld’s disorganized desk, which is stacked high with books, magazines, sketching pencils, and his constant glass of Diet Coke.
Lagerfeld created for the likes of Chanel, Fendi, Chloe and many more before his death in 2019.
Roughly 400 A-listers are expected to attend Monday’s gala.
This year’s hosts include Penelope Cruz, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa.
