The B.B.C.’s chairman is stepping down, following a report that he had broken the government’s rules governing public appointments.

Since it was discovered that Richard Sharp assisted in setting up a loan for former prime minister Boris Johnson in 2021, the publicly funded national broadcaster has come under fire.

Weeks after setting up the line of credit for Johnson, who at the time was both the leader of the Conservative Party and of Britain, Sharp was nominated to the B.B.C. position on the government’s recommendation.

After making a “inadvertent” violation of the guidelines, Sharp announced his resignation on Friday, saying he was doing so to “prioritize the interests of the B.B.C.”
