According to figures issued by the United Nations on Wednesday, India is on course to become the world’s most populous country, surpassing China by 2.9 million people by mid-2023.
According to U.N. forecasts, the South Asian country would have 1.4286 billion to China’s 1.4257 billion by the middle of the year.
China has had the world’s largest population since at least 1950, when the United Nations began collecting population data.
China and India each have over 1.4 billion people, accounting for more than a third of the world’s 8 billion inhabitants.
