Not only is Canada’s national women’s hockey team continuing to defend its world championship, the tournament, being hosted by Brampton, is having a major economic impact on the community.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown says the city put up $300,000 to host the tournament. Initial estimates indicate it’s already brought some $5 million dollars to the community. As a result, Mayor Brown says the city has already informed the International Ice Hockey Federation it would like to host the tournament again.
Thursday night, Sarah Nurse scored the deciding goal as Canada beat Sweden 3 – 2 in overtime in quarterfinal action. Canada will now face Switzerland in the semifinals Saturday at 4 p.m.
The winner plays for the world championship Sunday.
