Canada’s prime minister is blaming “unfounded and ungrounded attacks” on the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation for Tuesday’s resignation of the foundation’s CEO and volunteer board of directors.

Justin Trudeau is defending the organization as a charity that does good work to support Canadian thinkers.

“It was established to promote knowledge and academic research into the humanities following the death of my father,” Trudeau told reporters in Toronto, “And has had an extraordinary impact on academic institutions and brilliant Canadians.”

He went on to say it is a shame to see the level of toxicity and political polarization that is going on in our country these days.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre posted on Twitter, “We need to know who got rich, who got paid and who got privilege and power from Justin Trudeau as a result of funding to the Trudeau Foundation.”

A spokesperson for Poilievre says the Conservative leader is raising questions after a Globe and Mail report linked a $200,000 donation in 2016 to a suspected influence campaign by the Chinese government.

According to the foundation, that donation has since been refunded.
