An infant’s missing, after the bodies of six migrants were pulled from the St. Lawrence River in the part of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory in Quebec.
Akwesasne Mohawk Police deputy chief Lee-Ann O’Brien says the six are believed to be from two families; one of Romanian descent and the other believed to be citizens of India.
”The deceased included 5 adults and one child under the age of 3, who was a Canadian citizen,” O’Brien adds.
“Police believe one infant, from the Romanian family, has not been located, and will continue searching.
All are believed to have been attempting illegal entry into the U.S. from Canada.”
The bodies were located during a search for 30-year-old Akwesasne resident Casey Oakes, who was reported missing yesterday.
A boat, matching the description of one he was operating, was found near the victims.
Authorities say there have been 48 incidents of people trying to cross illegally into Canada or into the U.S. through the Mohawk territory since January.
Most have been of Indian or Romanian descent.
The region’s known for being a transit point for the trafficking of humans and contraband because of its location.
Akwesasne’s about 120-kilometres west of Montreal and straddles the border while occupying territory in Ontario, Quebec and New York state.
