The final report from the public inquiry into the April 2020 mass shootings says police ”missed red flags” leading up to murders of 22 people, including an RCMP officer.
The seven-volume report makes 17 recommendations to address gender-based violence, including an overhaul of the national police service.
”Significant changes are needed to address various community safety and well-being needs in the 21st century,” says Commissioner Leanne Fitch.
”All too often, gender-based, intimate partner and family violence are precursors to the forms of violence that are more readily seen as being of broader ‘public’ concern,” the report states.
”We ignore these forms of violence at our collective peril.”
Prime Minster Justin Trudeau says the federal government will take the time to properly ”digest” the recommendations and conclusions.
”There’s no question there need to be changes and there will be, but we’ll take the time to get those right.”
