Israeli ambassadors in Canada have joined a strike in opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bid to reform the legal system of the nation.
Israeli Embassy spokesman Eli Lipshitz has confirmed that the mission in Ottawa is closed in accordance with a decision by Israel’s largest trade union, Histadrut.
According to Histadrut spokesman Yaniv Levy, missions are only offering emergency services.
Workers from a variety of fields went on strike on Monday in an effort to put Netanyahu under more pressure to drop the overhaul plan.
Israel is currently experiencing one of its worst domestic crises due to the planned overhaul.
Universities have closed their doors, departing flights from the country’s main international airport have been grounded, and the primary doctors’ union has said that its members would also walk off the job.
Tens of thousands of Israeli protesters poured into the streets of cities across the country in a spontaneous outburst of anger, after Netanyahu abruptly fired his defence minister for challenging the Israeli leader’s judicial overhaul plan.
