The John Tory era in Toronto comes to an end at 5pm Friday February 17th.
Tory submitted his formal resignation to the city clerk’s office late Wednesday evening, following approval by Toronto city council of the 2023 operating and capital budgets.
It was what he promised to do this past Friday night when he admitted to having had a relationship with a former staff member in his office.
The letter he submitted reads as follows:
February 15, 2023
John D. Elvidge
City of Toronto
Toronto City Hall
100 Queen Street West
Toronto ON M5H 2N2
Dear Mr. Elvidge,
In accordance with s. 205(1) of the City of Toronto Act, I hereby submit my resignation from the office of Mayor for the City of Toronto effective at 5PM EST, Friday, February 17, 2023.
I will be spending the next two days in meetings with Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie and City staff to continue to ensure an orderly transition.
I want to thank the people of Toronto for trusting me as Mayor since 2014. I continue to be deeply sorry and apologize unreservedly to the people of Toronto and to all those hurt by my actions without
This has been the job of a lifetime, and while I have let many people, including myself, down in this instance, I have nonetheless been deeply honoured by the opportunity to serve the people of this wonderful city for more than eight years and I hope I achieved some good for the city I truly love.
I will continue to be a contributing citizen hopefully in a number of different ways. That is because I love the people of Toronto and I will never stop believing in Toronto and all of the residents who make it up.
Mayor of Toronto
