Tears, smiles and even some laughs echoed throughout the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga at the funeral service for Hazel McCallion.
On what would have been her 102nd birthday, speaker after speaker, from her successor and current Mayor Bonnie Crombie, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, former prime minister Jean Chretien and Premier Doug Ford, they all essentially said the former long-time mayor was a force of nature.
”Mississauga is a better city, Ontario is a better province and Canada is a better country because of the amazing life of Hazel McCallion,” said Ford.
”I must admit though, it feels a little strange to be here today,” said Trudeau.
”Hazel was so unstoppable, I think we all felt she was going to live forever.”
”When I quit at 70 she called me to give me hell (laughter),” recalled Chretien, ” ‘What happened to you?’ ”
”I said Hazel compared to you I’m a chicken, so I’m gone, because I cannot be tough as you are.”
Chretien ended by saying he’s sure that when she arrived up there, ”St. Peter said to her ‘Well done Hazel’.”
Current Mayor Bonnie Crombie said there was not much that could slow down Hazel.
”We all know that she was truly a force of nature.”
