Doug Ford and Sylvia Jones will be the first provincial representatives to negotiate directly with the federal health and intergovernmental affairs ministers for new healthcare money.

Ontario’s premier and his health minister are scheduled to meet Thursday in Toronto with Jean-Yves Duclos and Dominic LeBlanc following the healthcare summit in Ottawa.

Premier Ford said Wednesday that Ontario will accept any new money on health care from the federal government.

But a renowned oncologist says he cannot get “too excited” about Ottawa and the provinces arguing over how much of your tax dollars they’re going to spend on health-care.

“This isn’t really new money, it’s basically an allocation of existing money that you’re paying on taxes,” Dr. Malcolm Moore of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, “Right now, when you pay your taxes, I think about 60-percent goes to the federal government, 38-percent goes to the provincial government. To me, a logical way to do it would be to alter the distribution so the provinces would get more because healthcare is more expensive.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau presented an offer to the provinces and territories that would see an additional $17-billion over 10 years added to the Canada Health Transfer, and another $25-billion via one-on-one deals with provinces over the next decade.
