The city is deploying 80 additional Toronto police officers to monitor the city’s transit system every day, indefinitely.

City leaders addressed the growing crisis during a news conference from police headquarters.

The city says it can’t offer a cost just yet for the increased security. Police Chief Myron Demkiw says the extra shifts will involve off-duty officers working overtime shifts so that frontline officers can keep responding to priority calls.

In addition, the TTC is also adding more staff amid a spike in violent incidents on buses, streetcars and subways.

“We’re increasing our presence at the TTC with special constables while we’re in the process of hiring additional special constables for this year,” says CEO Rick Leary.” We’re adding more Streets to Homes workers to help in our hotspots to actually help unhoused individuals and get them access to the help they need and we’re also adding and improving our camera systems at all of our stations and on all our vehicles.”

Mayor John Tory had a message for those who say additional security won’t solve the problem.

“Deploying more police officers on the system during a time of some anxiety is simply the right thing to do, it will be complemented by measures I announced earlier this month as part of the city’s budget which I trust will be approved,” said Tory.

The Mayor will meet again Friday with the police chief and head of the TTC to discuss additional steps.

Meantime, the latest violent transit incident happened before noon Thursday when a group of teens allegedly shot a female passenger with a B-B gun at York University’s subway station.

Four people were taken into custody: one 16-year-old boy, two 15-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl.

The victim was hot hurt.
