The Pacific island nation of Vanuatu was shaken by a strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and a tsunami warning has been issued for potentially dangerous waves in neighboring waters.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 17 miles and had its epicenter 15 miles away from Port Olry.

A tsunami alert was issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center for coastlines that were 186 miles or less from the epicenter.

There are no current reports of injuries or damage.

There are around 280,000 people living in Vanuatu, which is prone to natural calamities due to its half-dozen active volcanoes, recurrent cyclones, and earthquakes.

It is situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a network of seismic faults that surrounds the Pacific Ocean and is a frequent site of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
