Republican Kevin McCarthy defeated holdouts within his own party to win the historic post-midnight 15th ballot for House speaker.
After a turbulent week that put the new GOP majority’s ability to govern to the test, the tension on the floor erupted into yelling.
However, McCarthy ultimately triumphed as he had promised.
He said, “Now the hard work starts begins” as his supporters applauded.
McCarthy converted more than a dozen conservative holdouts throughout four days of arduous voting.
